Celebrity special: Conductor goes Orthodox to marry

The US-Italian conductor Carlos Ponti jr. has converted to Orthodox Christianity in order to marry Mariam Sharmanashvili, a zumba teacher, in Tbilisi. Ponti, 56, and Sharmanashvili, 37, performed a ritual Georgian dance at the nuptials.

Ponti, former associate conductor of the Russian National Orchestra, is the son of the Italian film star Sophia Loren.
