Chicago trumpet pioneer dies

The death has been announced of Bette Eilers, who became Principal Trumpet in the Chicago Civic Orchestra at the age of 17.

In 1954, she began playing with the Chicago Symphony under Fritz Reiner, and later with Leopold Stokowski and Pierre Boulez. She was playing at theLyric Opera when Artur Rodzinski fired the principal horn and the other women walked out.
