Aside from the sideshow of the Palestine flag-waver, a leading baritone in the Trovatore cast has lashed out on his Facebook page against the artistic management of the company, particularly at conductor Carlo Rizzi and director Adele Thomas.
Juan Jesus Rodriguez Jimenez, singing Conte de Luna, let rip online on Saturday night, hours after the flag incident (which interfered with his applause, but is not mentioned in his gripe). Here’s what he has to say:
Today we bid farewell to this Trovatore at the Royal Opera House in London.
The Royal Opera House in London is a temple stepped on by the greatest artists, it boasts a sublime orchestra and choir, the finest casts and a team of professionals enviable by any theatre.
NO ONE has the right to break anyone’s harmony and here in this production of Adele Thomas with music direction by Carlos Rizzi it has happened.
Singers have had to overcome the challenge of not falling down the stairs or, in my case, not suffering a heat-induced syncope from the suit or seeing my aria being stage-ridiculed. All this while we’ve had to look at a musical director who doesn’t seem to care much if you need to breathe or if your voice can be heard above the orchestra; the accompaniment is already fiction.
Thanks to my personal strength, technique and my experience with this opera I have sung in great theaters such as the Met of New York, San Carlo of Napoli, Massimo di Palermo, Lyceum of Barcelona, Opera of Beijing, Maggio Fiorentino, Palau de les Arts of Valencia, Euskalduna of Bilbao etc I have been able to get up to the end of this that I consider an “attack” against Verdi and above all against artists.
What infuriates me the most is the lack of humanity, the indignation and the abuse of power.
Never again will I repeat with these two “geniuses”.
TOI TOI TOI to all mates for our last function today. My deepest admiration for the entire cast of artists and professionals.
This message seeks justice to be done above any personal interest.
Today we finally bid farewell to this Trovatore at the Royal Opera House in London.

We singers have had to overcome the challenge of not falling down the stairs or, in my case, not suffering syncope from the heat caused by the costume or seeing my aria ridiculed on stage. All this while having to look at a musical director who seems to care little if you need to breathe or if your voice can be heard above the orchestra; accompanying is already a fiction.

What outrages me most is the lack of humanity, the deification and the mistreatment and abuse of power.
Never again will I repeat with these two “geniuses”.
TOI TOI TOI TOI to all colleagues for our last performance today. My deepest admiration for all the cast of artists and professionals.
