Dear Alma, How do I date a viola?

Dear Alma, How do I date a viola?

From our agony aunt:

Dear Alma,

I like a violist in my youth orchestra and I’m pretty sure they like me too. But the problem is that we’re both your stereotypical socially shy/awkward violist!

Do you have any advice for making a first move?

Sincerely,

Violist

Dear Violist,

Ah, to be young and in crush. What fun. The endless speculation, the darting glances.

Violist, I know you feel shy, but try to remember that every time you put your viola up, you are brave, and try to channel that strength.

You could try putting together a chamber music party at school or your house, inviting 8 or more people, and including your crush. Everyone can bring something to eat and something to sightread, maybe watch a movie after, and you can look for a chance to get to know your crush a little better.

Or, if you can put together a viola quintet – that’s two violins, two violas and a cello – and play a Mozart quintet. Get some group lessons from a teacher and set up a concert at a retirement home.

Your first move doesn’t have to be a one-on-one date. Find a fun, social way to get to know them away from orchestra and take it from there.

Good luck, Violist!
