From our agony aunt’s mailbox – another slice of music life in the raw:
Dear Alma,
A former male leader of a well-respected European orchestra was teaching at a music festival this summer. He is known to be very complimentary of his female students, often noting that they look pretty in, for example, a white tank top.
This year, he took it too far, inviting someone to go to swimming together and asking several students their dating status. He also made some inappropriate gestures towards students.
People in charge at the festival are aware, however it is unclear if this faculty appointment will change in the future. What else can be done?
These students are on average 20 years younger.
Signed,
Concerned
Dear Concerned,
I mean, really!?!?!? How is it possible that people can still be acting like this, after all that has happened. Acting like this to victims, to perpetrators, to institutions that don’t address this matter straight-forward and clearly to all concerned. It’s enough to curl my nose-hairs.
Yes. Take it into your own hands. If you are brave and strong. And please do be brave and strong. Contact the administration. Make it very clear what the situation is and what students expect from an institution, both from faculty and administration. And if they don’t comply, make a stink and let people know what’s happening.
I attended a summer camp where a student had been raped. She had gone to the emergency room, it was cut and dry. The camp covered it over, sent her home, and did nothing to the perpetrators. I stood up and vocally demanded clarity and resolution, fair treatment, let the students and faculty know. And what happened? I got kicked out and was never allowed to return.
It was one of my proudest moments.
Be more than Concerned. Be vocal.
