Death of a major composer, 92

Death of a major composer, 92

Wise Music Group has published news of the passing of the Danish composer Per Nørgård.

The foremost musical Dane since Carl Nielsen, Nørgård composed eight symphonies, six operas, ten concertos, choral music, much chamber music – in all, some 400 works. Two of his symphonies were recorded by the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Sakari Oramo.

The composer Søren Nils Eichberg writes: ‘The great Danish composer Per Nørgård died this night, aged 92. He was a huge inspiration for me from very early on. I was still in high school when I first heard his Symphonies 2, 3 and 4 and ordered the scores for them in the local library. The music touched me deeply and had a strong impact on what I considered possible for music at all. His music always had a highly individual human touch to it which was hard to describe. I later quoted his “infinity-row” technique in 2-3 pieces, among others in “Qilaatersorneq” which was the piece that opened the doors to professional life for me. May you rest in peace, Per! Thank you for the music!’
