The death has been published today of Adrian Gnam, George Szell’s principal oboe at the Cleveland Orchestra and later music director of the Macon Symphony Orchestra in Georgia for 27 years.
Her served for eight years as Director of the Music Program at the National Endowment for the Arts.

It’s with a heavy heart and profound sadness that I share the news of Maestro Adrian Gnam’s passing. For me, he was more than a mentor; he was the very source of who I am as a conductor and as a person.
I met Adrian when I was just 19, a young soul just beginning to explore the world of conducting. He saw something in me, believed in me with unwavering faith, and took me under his wing. I moved to Macon, lived in his home, and embarked on an incredible journey as his protégé with the Macon Symphony Orchestra.
Under his guidance, I had the extraordinary opportunity to conduct my very first Subscription, Pops Concert, and Young People’s Concert.
He illuminated the vital role of the arts within a community, a lesson that has stayed with me throughout my career. And yes, he even introduced me to the appreciation of good whiskey!
Even recently, his thoughtful calls would bring his insightful comments on my conducting videos. I treasured every word, every piece of his wisdom. Seeing him last year, I never imagined our time together would be so abruptly cut short.
Adrian, the words feel inadequate to express the depth of my grief and gratitude. Finding the right way to say goodbye feels impossibly painful. I miss you dearly, and I will forever cherish the memories we shared. Please, continue to send your guiding comments from above.
