Death of an ex-Russian music director, 74

The Georgian-Russian music conductor Vakhtang Machavariani, head of the Georgian State Symphony Orchestra in Tbilisi since 1996, has died at the age of 74.

In 1990 he created the Soviet Festival Orchestra while also conducting at the Bolshoi.

He had a strong relationship with the Presidential Symphony Orchestra of Turkey. Lately, he performed at events in support of Ukraine.
