Death of Israel’s foremost musicologist, 86

Death of Israel’s foremost musicologist, 86

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has announced the death of Jehoash Hirschberg, who taught in its department of musicology from 1971. Hirchberg was the biographer of the Israeli composer Paul Ben-Haim.

He also write books on music in the Jewish community in Palestine up to 1948, and on music among the Karaites.

A shy man, soft-spoken, he was generous with facts and frugal with opinions. Latterly, he denounced Netanyahu’s attempted putsch of the supreme court.
