Death of most trusted violin dealer

Death of most trusted violin dealer

The violin world is in mourning for Charles Beare, a London dealer expert in Cremona instruments and a friend to talented performers. Charles, who died at the weekend, was 87.

The stepson of William Beare, director of J & A Beare, Charler came of age with the Barenboim generation and was particularly friendly with Jacqueline du Pre. Others with whom he developed a close relationship were Nathan Milstein, Yehudi Menuhin and Pinchas Zukerman. He was open and fair-minded with media and did much to dispel false narratives about some of his clients.

In 2012 he left the family firm and set up in business with his two sons.

He wore his great knowledge lightly.
