Domingo mourns Pippo

Domingo mourns Pippo

The Spanish singer has posted this tribute to the late Italian television presenter, Pippo Baudo:

Caro Pippo,
thank you for accompanying us for so many years with your friendliness and great professionalism, entering the homes of all of us through the small screen. Your timeless style will remain in our hearts.

Others remember a charity concert Domingo gave in Bari while filming Otello nearby with Zeffirelli and Baudo’s fiancee, Katia Ricciarelli:

At the news of Pippo Baudo’s death, the memory of the concert with the orchestra of the Petruzzelli Teatro, November 1985, at the Petruzzeli Teatro in Bari “Viva Mexico”. I was in the Orchestra and the concert was dedicated to the terrible earthquake in Mexico on September 19, 1985. The event was live on Rai. I remember that the great tenor Placido Domingo, besides singing, was directing the overture of the Sicilian Vespers by Giuseppe Verdi. The soprano was Katia Ricciarelli and the special guest was the great director Franco Zeffirelli. The presenter of the evening was him, the great Pippo Baudo, and on that occasion he announced the impending marriage to Katia Ricciarelli. But that concert stuck with me for a moment, a few seconds… there was something wrong on the stage between the various guests, I would say an embarrassing moment live on Rai, but immediately Pippo arrived and with an impromptu joke he made the whole Theatre laugh and the panic on the stage ended. He was an amazing professional, perfect in live TV. Rest in peace Pippo.
