Dudamel latest: He’s taking the Berlin Phil to Japan

Gustavo Dudamel is rewriting the guest tour rules.

Here’s the press release:

The Berliner Philharmoniker will embark on a concert tour of Japan under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel, continuing their long-standing relationship with the country. From 2 to 6 July, they will give a total of four concerts in Osaka, Nagoya and Kawaguchiko.

The performance on 2 July in Osaka represents a very special return: back in 1970, the Berliner Philharmoniker were guests at the Expo in Osaka, the first world exhibition in Japan at the time. The concerts under the direction of Herbert von Karajan contributed significantly to the consolidation of German-Japanese cultural relations. The orchestra’s return to Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai after 55 years under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel highlights the deep and lasting connection between the Berliner Philharmoniker and Japan. In addition to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, the programme includes Ludwig van Beethoven’s incidental music to Goethe’s Egmont. Christina Landshamer is the soprano soloist, and Masumitsu Miyamoto will narrate in Japanese.
