Ex-Juilliard pianist is found guilty of murder

A court in South Carolina has found Zachary David Hughes guilty of murdering Christina Parcell, 41, in October 2021. Hughes, 32, is a Juilliard graduate who studied with Jerome Lowenthal. He was resident pianist with the Knoxville Symphony in 2017-18.

Hughes claimed he killed Parcell, a veterinary worker, to protect her child from abuse. She died from more than 30 stab wounds. Hughes was a friend of the victim’s ex-husband.

Sentence has yet to be passed.
