Exclusive: Ex-ENO chief lands India jewel

Exclusive: Ex-ENO chief lands India jewel

We gather that Martyn Brabbins, who resigned two years ago as music director of English National Opera in face of its dismemberment, has been appointed Chief Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of India, starting in January 2026.

This is some coup. The SOI has been improving by leaps and bounds. This past year it has played with Mark Elder, Andrew Litton and Zubin Mehta. Its recently celebrated the 90th birthday of its main benefactor, K N Suntook, with a blaze of music, east and west.

Brabbins, 65, will also become music director of the Malmo Symphony in Sweden in the coming season.
