The theatre and opera director Benoît Jacquot was charged with rape by Paris prosecutors on Wednesday.

Evidence against Jacquot, who directed Werther for Antponio Pappano at Covent Garden in 2003, was given by two actresses, one of whom was a minor at the time. The alleged offences took place between 1998 and 2013.

He spent three days in custody this week and has been released on 25,000 Euros bail.
