Canada’s National Arts Centre last night appointed John Storgårds as the eighth music director of its resident orchestra. Storgårds, 62, is also chief conductor of the BBC Philharmonic in Manchester.
Storgårds is Finnish. So is Esa-Pekka Salonen, who was rolled out yesterday as chief conductor of the Orechestre de Paris, as well as creative director of the LA Phil. So, too, is Tarmo Peltokoski, who starts this month as chief of the Orchestre National de Toulouse and next year as head of the Hong Kong Philharmonic.
Not to mention the multi-job Klaus Mäkelä, whom Salonen will replace in Paris. And a dozen others who occupy or are presently auditioning for top jobs. Some are quite good.
Finland is a country with 5.6 million people. It has also become a preferred baton brand for world orchestras.
