Juilliard cellist dies, 84

Juilliard cellist dies, 84

The death has been made known fo Joel Krosnick, cellist of the Juilliard String Quartet for exactly half his life, from 1974 to 2016.

He was chair of the cello department for much of that period, a time of big-beast teachers.

Kornick was born 3 April 1941 in New Haven, Connecticut.

Here are some tributes:

Uri Vardi: I’m so sad to learn about the passing of this amazing human being, musician and cellist. RIP dear colleague- Joel Krosnick

Zuill Bailey: A musical titan.

Annie Fullard: None of us will forget the profound musical spirit, the joyful intensity, the spark, and the humanity of this artist – the world will not be the same.

Thor S Sigurdson: RIP Joel Krosnick. An incredible presence on and off the stage. So grateful I had one year of amazing coachings with him. I owe him so much. Thanks, Mr K, for all your love and devotion to chamber music, and in particular contemporary music. You changed everything about the modern cello and inspired so many composers…

Hannah Sun Ripert: “There’s either passion or there ain’t no notes!” When I remember Joel Krosnick’s impact on my life, I think of what he said at Kneisel one summer, and countless ways his music and ideas continue to resonate in me and through to my students today—the way he stretched our imagination and helped make it real, the way he embodied rhythm visceral as our heartbeat, and the way he always made us see the big picture—in music, and in life. Thank you, Joel Krosnick for all that you have given us. We all love and miss you so. (My favorite snapshot of him with my dear teacher Seymour Lipkin—I’m sure they’re now playing Schubert together again in heaven).
