Jus in: International cellist is killed in car crash

Cello students at the University of Münster in Germany have been told that their Brazilian professor, Matias de Oliveira Pinto, was killed last night in a car crash. The details have yet to be disclosed. Matias was 64.

At the age of 20, Matias received a scholarship from the Herbert von Karajan Foundation to study in Berlin, moving on to Budapest and London. After a worldwide career as a soloist and chamber musician, he divided his time teaching in Germany and in Brazil, where he was artistic director of the Ouro Branco Festival. He recently recorded Camargo Guarnieri’s Choro for cello and orchestra for the Naxos label.
