Just in: New job for Sir Mark Elder

The Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia has named Sir Mark Elder as its music director, from September.

Elder, 77, stepped down last year after quarter of a century as head of the Halle Orchestra in Manchester.

His duties in Valencia will comprise two operas and two symphonic concerts a a year. The orchestra has a roll of 76 musicians at present.

The artistic director of Les Arts, Jesús Iglesias Noriega, said: ‘Sir Mark Elder is one of the greatest names on the international music circuit. His formidable professional career, immeasurable musical background and impeccable professional discipline anticipate a period of excellence, growth and success for the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana and also for Les Arts.’
 

After Manchester’s murk, Mark might need sunglasses most days at work.
