Just in: NY Phil summons last-minute maestro

The New York Philharmonic has a debutant conductor tonight and through the weekend.

Juanjo Mena has called in ‘indisposed’ (to quote the jargon). His replacement is Brett Mitchell of the Psadena Symphony who, in his previous job in Colorado, co-commissioned Kevin Puts to compose The Brightness of Light. This will be the work’s NY premiere. Mitchell will conduct soloists Renée Fleming and baritone Rod Gilfry.

The second half is Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé.
