Just in: Zubin cancels Berlin Phil after China jaunt

Just in: Zubin cancels Berlin Phil after China jaunt

The Berlin Philharmonic has put out a terse statement of change to this week’s schedule:

‘It is with great regret that for health reasons Zubin Mehta has been forced to cancel the concerts from 20 to 22 March at short notice’.

It fails to mention that Mehta has just ended a gruelling trip with the West-East Diwan orchestra, standing in for his incapacitated friend Daniel Barenboim. Mehta will be 89 next month. His Berlin concerts were booked years ago. He needs to attend better to priorities.

The Berlin Phil has called in Sebastian Weigle, 64, as replacement. His will be making his debut with the elite orchestra.
