LA Phil cellist, RIP

LA Phil cellist, RIP

Steve Custer, who has died aged 81, won an LA Phil audition with Zubin Mehta in 1974 and played in the cello section until 2010.

He appeared in more than 5,000 concerts following the batons of Leonard Bernstein, John Williams, Gustavo Dudamel, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Carlo Maria Giulini. In retirement he played principal cello in the Northern Neck Orchestra and jumped in when needed at the Richmond Symphony and Virginia Opera.

His son, Roger, will play clarinet at his funeral service.
