La Scala mourns dedicated general director, 75

A career-long executive at the home of Italian opera, Maria Di Freda has died of an incurable illness.

Maria joined La Scala in 1973 and was promoted to personnel director in 1991. Suriving the tubulent Muti era, she was apppointed general director in 2008, a post she held until 2021. She served with three Sovrintendente of very different character – Stephane Lissner, Alexander Pereira and Dominque Meyer.
