Maestro quits abruptly in Spain

Maestro quits abruptly in Spain

The orchestra of Spain’s poorest region has just lost its leader:

Andrés Salado, Artistic and Principal Conductor of the Orquesta de Extremadura (OEX) in Spain, has terminated his position at the helm of the orchestra due to, in his words, the ‘lack of institutional support’.

Salado, in a letter addressed to the Board of Trustees of the Fundación de la Orquesta de Extremadura, denounces that his ‘non-continuation in the post of Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the OEX is due exclusively to the lack of institutional support, and that it is not correct to note any other reason in this respect’. And he continues: ‘Even though the minimally necessary and ideal conditions to continue leading the project that occupies me in the OEX have not been procured, I continued to make an effort in this fourth season. My will, before the disappearance of this institutional support which I always enjoyed, was always to continue with the tenure and a musical project in which I believe from a professional and personal perspective and to which I have contributed unquestionable artistic, social and human results, in accordance with the foundational aims of the institution’.

Previously, Salado indicates that his various requests to the Board and the management of the Orchestra, in which he stated that ‘the unstable and unsustainable situation between the new manager and the principal and artistic director’ have not been listened to. Salado continues: ‘my concerns were ignored, and I also found that tasks proper to my position were being carried out and artistic decisions were being modified without consulting me, to which was added the dissemination of false testimonies about the fulfilment of my contract. These factors and the lack of institutional zeal led me, with the utmost honesty, to place my position at the disposal of the relevant institutions without receiving, to my surprise, neither support nor reinforcement’.
