Mahler’s publisher enlists Beijing in search for new composers

Press release:

The Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and Universal Edition are jointly launching the International Competition for Young Composers. The composition competition will take place every two years, alternating between a chamber music work and an orchestral work, starting in 2025 with a call for a chamber music work with a duration between 10 and 12 minutes. Contestants must be born in 1990 or later. There are no nationality restrictions.

The International Competition aims at providing a stage for young composers around the world to showcase their talents as well as strengthening academic and cultural exchange and building a community. The Jury Committee will be composed of internationally renowned composers invited by CCOM, the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts and UE, to ensure the fairness and transparency of the scoring process. The final concert, in which the three winners of the competition will be selected, will take place on 30 November 2025 in the late afternoon at the MuTh in Vienna in the presence of the jury. The winners will be announced in a separate ceremony after the concert. All winners have the right to publish their works with UE via scodo and will receive an annual subscription for scodo as part of the prize.

“International collaboration is essential for fostering the creation of new music, offering young composers the opportunity to share their unique voices with the world. By joining forces, CCOM, mdw, and Universal Edition provide a platform that not only celebrates innovation but also nurtures creativity and cross-cultural dialogue in composition.” – Astrid Koblanck, CEO Universal Edition

Universal Edition was founded in 1901 and is one of the largest and most traditional music publishers in Austria. It has been distributing its sheet music for more than 100 years, including music for beginners as well as professional players of the best orchestras and houses worldwide. www.universaledition.com
