Composer Helen Caddick and textile artist Margo Selby collaborated on an immersive cross-genre piece, moon landing, for Collect 2024 at Somerset House. [see my article]
As part of the exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery (which closes on 8 September), The Sun and Moon – Art inspired by the Celestial the work has been on display again.
Margo Selby and Helen Caddick had long been fascinated about the crossovers between music and textiles, mathematics and science which sparked our initial conversations and desire to collaborate. moon landing is inspired by the little known story that it was Navajo women and women at the Raytheon Plant who wove the integrated circuits and memory cores on the Apollo 11 which enabled the moon landing. By creating moon landing Helen Caddick wish to bring their story to greater public consciousness.
Caddick’s moon landing is written for 2 harps, 2 cellos and 2 violins and the music can be downloaded from Bandcamp. But hearing the piece in the context of Selby’s astounding piece of weaving is definitely worthwhile.
