New Orleans honours a Japanese jazz pianist

Preservation Hall jazz club in New Orleans has named Japanese pianist Mari Watanabe as a winner of this year’s Legacy Awards.

Watanabe, 59, is the first Japanese musician to be recognised in the homeland of trad jazz.

Originally from Tokyo, she moved to New Orleans and has played Preservation Hall often since 1994.
