Paris theatre is cleared of migrant occupation

Paris theatre is cleared of migrant occupation

Three months after it was squatted by 200 homeless migrants and their supporters, the Belleville cultural centre La Gaité Lyrique was finally evacuated yesterday after an intervention by the minister of culture, Rachida Dati. The occupation began on December 10. By this weekend, the numbers in residence had doubled to 400.

Those who took part in the occupation have been offered social housing away from Paris, in Rouen.

The costs of restoring the theatre have yet to be assessed.
