Piano accompanists refuse to play

Piano accompanists refuse to play

For the past two weeks, staff pianists at the national conservatoires of Paris (pic) and Lyon have been on strike. They are demanding the removal of a 1,650-Euro cap on their monthly wages.

Other professors have also walked out and a host of music personalities – 1400 in all – have signed a support petition. They include: conductors Alain Altinoglu, Raphaël Pichon and Tugan Sokhiev; singers Natalie Dessay, Sabine Devieilhe, Julie Fuchs and Patricia Petibon; composers Pascal Dusapin and Thierry Escaich and piano duo Katia and Marielle Labèque.
