Rattle’s orchestra blasts newspaper for lack of reviews

Rattle’s orchestra blasts newspaper for lack of reviews

The manager of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Nikolaus Pont, has circulated an open letter to colleagues, lashing out at the Süddeutsche Zeitung for minimising reviews of the orchestra. ‘I heard at the end of last week,’ he says ‘that a decision was recently made at high levels of the Süddeutsche Verlag … to allow only four or six (reports vary) concerts in Munich to be reviewed per month in the Feuilleton or München-Kultur (Munich Culture) section.’

He adds: ‘Perhaps you would join my intention to inform and sensitize as many people in your community as possible in the near future – it certainly won’t hurt if the disappointment about this decision is reflected in a corresponding number of letters to the editor.’

In the wider world, this tendency is known as New York Times syndrome. Like the NYT, the Süddeutsche used to review anything that moved in and around Munich. But reviews no longer get many clicks, and the newspaper has a duty to its owners.
