Renowned soprano, RIP

The death has been announced of the Swiss soprano Edith Mathis, one of the most recorded artists of her time. She died on Sunday, two days short of her 86th birthday.

Born in Lucerne, she was renowned for Mozart operas and for the two soprano roles in Der Rosenkavalier. She recorded Mahler’s fourth symphony with Karajan and Bernstein and his second with Kubelik and Tennstedt. She was also one of the most admired Lieder singers.

She married the German conductor Bernhard Klee, who survives her.
