This week, the last of four solo rounds for the ROSL Annual Music Competition concluded, seeing violinist Mabelle Young-Eun Park join pianist Rafael Kyrychenko, soprano Madeleine Perring and oboist Ewan Milar in competing for the prestigious Gold Medal, which will take place at Wigmore Hall on 18th July this year. The Royal Over-Seas is also delighted to announce that the ROSL Collaborative Piano Prize for 2025 is awarded to Julian Chan.
Oboist Ewan Millar won the ROSL Prize for Woodwind and is a prominent young British oboist building a career in the UK. In 2020 Ewan won the woodwind final of BBC Young Musician and since then has been performing as a soloist in recitals around the UK. As a freelancer, he has performed as principal oboe with the RPO, Aurora Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, Birmingham Royal Ballet, and London Concertante. Ewan studied at St. Hilda’s College, Oxford and the Royal Academy of Music
British soprano Madeleine Perring won the ROSL Prize for Singers. Madeleine started her musical career as a chorister and subsequently Head Chorister at Wells Cathedral, she developed as a vocal specialist at the school while juggling her role as Head Girl, and then even more so at the Royal College of Music. After graduating from the RCM with first class honours, Madeleine is now continuing her Master’s studies as a Brooks-Anderson Award holder with Rosa Mannion.
Portuguese pianist Rafael Kyrychenko won the ROSL Award for Keyboard. Rafael studied at the Madeira School of Arts, the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth with Maria João Pires, the Royal Conservatory of Brussels with Prof. Daniel Blumenthal, the Imola Piano Academy with Prof. Leonid Margarius, and is currently studying at the Escuela Superior Reina Sofia with Prof. Milana Chernyavska.
The ROSL Prize for Strings was awarded to German born, South-Korean violinist Mabelle Young-Eun Park, completing the Gold Medal competition lineup.Having graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in London with First Class Honours and full scholarship in 2024, she is currently on the Master of Arts programme studying with So-Ock Kim.
The ROSL Collaborative Piano prize is judged during the semi-finals and finals of the wind and brass, strings and singers rounds for all eligible pianists. Malaysian pianist Julian Chan was chosen as the 2025 winner who performed with cellist and duo partner Hugh Mackay in the Solo Strings Section. Julian is currently the recipient of the Aud Jebsen Fellowship at the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied with Ian Fountain and Michael Dussek. He has given performances at numerous prestigious venues across Europe and Asia, including Wigmore Hall, Southbank Centre, Nanjing Poly Theatre, and Palau de la Música Catalana.
