Running for Beethoven

Running for Beethoven

From Daria van den Bercken:

A running event during a classical piano concert. Is it possible? Yes!

On the final day of the Piano Biennale Festival in the Netherlands, we held Running for Beethoven. While orchestra Casco Phil and soloist Hanna Shybayeva warmed up inside the hall, runners of all ages gathered outside to do the same.

Then, with the first notes of Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto in C Major op.15 , the challenge began:
How many 1.5 km laps can you run before the final chord sounds?

On this sunny Sunday in April, the entire neighborhood in one of the Netherlands’ oldest cities – Nijmegen – could hear this beautiful piano concerto streamed live outdoors. Meanwhile, runners completed 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or even 6 rounds before crossing the finish line inside the stunning concert hall De Vereeniging Nijmegen.

Running for Beethoven is a concept created by the Fairplay Chamber Music Festival in Sweden. In Nijmegen-The Netherlands, it is now brought to life in a new and expanded version, where every runner finishes in the concert hall itself. The event is a collaboration between the Keys to Music Foundation and the Zevenheuvelenloop.
