Russia mourns great Chekhovian, 60

The Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre has announced the death of Evgenia Dobrovolskaya, two days after her 60th birthday. She had been battling cancer.

The theatre lamented: The leading actress of the Art Theatre, who played dozens of major roles on its stage for 33 years – our Zhenya, infinitely talented and fearless and equally infinitely doubting, unpredictable, extremely sincere, always real and in everything. It was Zhenya — despite her unconditional authority, merits and anniversaries (on December 26 we congratulated her on her 60th birthday), no one in the theater called her Evgenia Vladimirovna.

‘The Art Theater mourns and expresses condolences to the family of the actress — sons Stepan, Nikolai and Jan, daughter Anastasia, as well as to all her relatives and friends, all who loved her. We will inform you about the date and time of the farewell.’

Moscow born, Zhenya joined the Chekhov Art Theatre in 1991, playing all the leading heroines, while also earning fame in films and on television.

She married three times, always ton theatre people. She last filed for divorce in February 2022.
