Apache Dance

An Apache dance, if you’ve never come across one before, is a highly dramatic performance associated with Parisian street culture at the beginning of the 20th century. It reenacts a violent “discussion” between a pimp and a prostitute. It includes mock slaps and punches, the man picking up and throwing the woman to the ground, or lifting and carrying her while she struggles or feigns unconsciousness. Sometimes, the woman fights back. It has nothing to do with American Indians.

This Apache dance was Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean’s winning performance of the 1985 World Professional Championships for which they were awarded straight 10s, except for one mean judge who gave them a 9.9. They’re probably still wondering what they did wrong.
