Who was the man who invented Peter Pan? What kind of person invents a child hero determined never to grow up? Or a pirate with hook for a hand? Or a whole troup of Lost Boys who came from nowhere? Or a girl-mother? Or a nanny who is a dog?

J.M. Barrie died on June 19th, 1937, 87 years ago today and his invention not only survives him but flourishes with books, films, and plays celebrating his flying boy with no shadow.

Despite having grown up in a large Scottish family, and marrying a beautiful actress, becoming a knight of the realm, and becoming rich and famous, James Matthew Barrie was a lonely man throughout his life. His only significant relationships were with children, primarily the Llewelyn Davis family, the 5 boys he met in Kensington Gardens and whose guardian he eventually became.
