The Painter’s Painter
Nicholas Poussin is often referred to as the ‘painter’s painter’ due to his influence on artists through the decades but the National Gallery in London, which has a number of his paintings in their collection, was missing a key aspect of his work – his famous Seven Sacraments. Now, the Gallery has acquired ‘Eucharist’ (about 1637‒40) from this series. It is one of the greatest paintings of the Last Supper.
Here are National Gallery curator Francesca Whitlum-Cooper and Head of Conservation,Larry Keith, in the conservation studio to see the newly acquired ‘Eucharist’alongside an earlier Poussin, ‘Cephalus and Aurora’ (about 1630).
