Jacob’s Pillow is a special place. Time magazine calls it, “the hub and mecca of dancing”, the NY Times calls it “the dance center of the nation” and no less a ballet luminary than Mikhail Baryshnikov says it is, “one of America’s most precious cultural assets.”

Pamela Tatge, Executive & Artistic Director of Jacob’s Pillow writes to say, “Last week, two of our federal grants from the National Endowment for the Arts were terminated.”

Since its founding in 1931 by dance pioneer, Ted Shawn, Jacob’s Pillow has been a place of refuge and possibility. A place where artists “come to create and audiences come to reflect, and a place where dance helps to celebrate the beauty of our shared humanity and make sense of the world around us.”

Each summer season it presents more than 150 dance performances – world premieres, U.S. debuts, exceptional and diverse artists, and collaborations with composers, visual artists, and writers – in the beautiful surroundings of the Berkshires in Massachusetts.

Here is Princess Lockeroo and the Fabulous Waack Dancers, just one of the many different kinds of dance, from ballet to kabuki, which are performed every summer. This video is free to watch but you need to register. Waacking, in case you’re wondering, is a street dance style originating in the ‘70s and requiring as much precision as classical ballet as well as total coordination with the music.
