The Night Watch
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn would have celebrated his 419th birthday this week which is my excuse for writing about him. Rembrandt (he ditched the ‘Harmenszoon’ early and became known as, simply, Rembrandt) was the greatest artist of the Dutch Golden Age.
There are many documentaries about his life and work and I finally decided to share this one about his most famous painting: The Night Watch (Militia Company of District II under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq), 1642. This is my favourite Rembrandt video, made for children, about his most famous painting.
Art historians Dr Beth Harris and Dr Steven Zucker tell the story of the painting and its origins in simple, direct terms so that even grown-ups can understand and appreciate it.
