Shock: Principal clarinet quits Berlin Phil

Shock: Principal clarinet quits Berlin Phil

Andreas Ottensamer has just issued this message:

I have decided to step down from my position as principal clarinet of the Berlin Philharmonic, in order to fully dedicate to my activities as a conductor.

The clarinet will remain part of my musical life – as chamber musician and soloist.

The past 14 years with this wonderful orchestra have been incredible – an experience of a lifetime, full of musical highlights I will always hold dear to my heart.

The musicianship of the Berlin Philharmonic, their distinct way of making music, has become part of my own musical DNA and I’m proud and excited to carry this with me on my future path as conductor and musician.

Vienna born, Ottensamer gained experience in the Vienna Philharmonic before auditioning for Berlin. He is 35, and a former tour partner of Yuja Wang (pic).

The Berlin Philharmonic has already removed his profile.
