Singapore mourns symphony founder

The death has been reported of Choo Hoey, founder of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and an international conductor in Brussels, London, Oslo, Athens and Beijing. He was 90.

National Arts Council Singapore writes: We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mr Choo Hoey, a pioneering figure in Singapore’s classical music landscape and one of our first Cultural Medallion recipients in 1979. That same year, he was invited to be the founding Music Director and Resident Conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO), marking the beginning of a transformative era in our nation’s classical music scene.

Mr Choo’s illustrious career spanned decades, from his acclaimed debut with the Belgian National Orchestra in 1958 to conducting over 60 international orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic and Beijing Central Philharmonic. As Principal Conductor of the Greek National Opera (1968 – 1977), he established himself as a distinguished figure in the global classical music scene.
Under his visionary leadership until 1996, the SSO achieved remarkable milestones, including its international debut in Scandinavia and three European tours. Beyond the SSO, he established the Singapore Symphony Chorus and served as a founding board member of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra. His contributions earned him numerous accolades, including the Public Service Star, an Honorary Doctorate from NUS, and the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres from the French Government.

It was a joy to welcome Maestro back to Singapore in 2019 to conduct SSO’s 40th anniversary concert. We have much to thank him for how far the SSO has come today – a testament to his pioneering vision and unwavering belief in our orchestra’s potential.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Mr Choo Hoey’s family and loved ones. While his presence will be deeply missed, his pioneering spirit and dedication to excellence in classical music will continue to inspire generations to come.
