Tall tulips weep as Dutch concertmaster quits

Tall tulips weep as Dutch concertmaster quits

At the start of this year, the associate concertmaster of the Concertgebouw orchestra Tjeerd Top caused a storm in the dykes by moving to the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra as concertmaster.

Old rivalries revived, rude words ensued. The Dutch don’t like people who rise above their station. They call them tall poppies. The Rotters rushed through his confirmation in half the usual time, cheering all the way.

Well, guess what?

Our floor mice in the big edam tell us that Meneer Top, 47, has got tired of Rotterdam after just five months and is heading back to his old seat in Amsterdam. Apparently, he left a wife behind in the C’bouw and she’s missing him.

The title of this soap opera is The Slinking Dutchman.
