From Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November, Lake District Music will take over Sedbergh School for The Bernstein Beat, a community weekend celebrating the music and work of Leonard Bernstein. There will be a community orchestra and performances by emerging artists all culminating in a final celebratory performance, The Bernstein Beat: What makes music dance.
Musicians of all ages are invited to join a community orchestra that will be conducted by Stephen Threllfall, artistic director of Lake District Music, and led by violinist Louise Latham. The orchestra will rehearse over the weekend with music by Bernstein.
On Saturday, three emerging pianists will perform Bernstein’s 29 Anniversaries, a set of miniatures that Bernstein dedicated to friends and family. These will be framed by anecdotes from Bernstein’s life with an introduction by his youngest daughter, Nina. She will introduce a screening of the film A Total Embrace, her personal tribute to Bernstein that explores his contribution to education through his children’s concerts.
The weekend culminates in a performance of The Bernstein Beat: What Makes Music Dance by Lake District Music’s community orchestra performing music from On The Town, Trouble in Tahiti, Candide and West Side Story.
Formed in 1985, Lake District Music presents a Summer Festival and Spring Series as well as championing emerging talent and nurturing some of the most exciting musicians of their generation combining summer festival performances with training from leading international artists, all set against the inspiring backdrop of the Lake District.
