Top lutenist, RIP

Top lutenist, RIP

The renowned British lute and theorbo player, David Miller, has died at the age of 72.

For four decades Dai – as he was universally known – played continuo on theorbo, chitarrone and baroque guitar for almost every leading UK period instrument orchestra and opera company. He was much sought-after as a sensitive accompanist and soloist on his greatest love, the renaissance lute. His playing can be heard on more than 150 recordings.

A notable teacher, he was professor of lute at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, at Trinity Laban, and at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. For twenty years he also taught and performed at Dartington International Summer School, where he inspired many of the newer generation of young lutenists.
