US university shuts music department

There were 144 students registered for music at Jacnsonville University, 123 of them majors.

But the private college, founded in 1934, has decided to shut down its music and theatre programs with a loss of 40 teaching jobs.

The local newspaper reports:

The cuts, an effort to save $10 million, are intended to align the university’s courses with the needs of today’s working world. They were announced to the affected students Tuesday morning. Some students appeared angry or crying as they left the meeting.
