Valery Gergiev is expanding his empire

The director of the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg and the Bolshoi in Moscow has been out in the far east of Russia, inspecting progress on a museum and theatre complex he’s constructing in Vladivostok.

Gergiev, 72, doesn’t get out much these days – at least, not outside Russia and China – so it must have made a nice change of scenery.

His  recent thwarted efforts to land a gig in Italy suggest he is feeling quite constricted.
