Infinitely troubled Winchester Cathedral is advertising for now fewer than five lay clerks.
An opportunity has become available for 5 permanent Lay Clerks to join us at Winchester Cathedral, working an average of 16 hours per week. This will be made up of 2 Altos, 2 Tenors and 1 Bass Lay Clerk. We also have opportunities for Deputy Lay Clerks for all three voice parts.
Reporting into the Director of Music, the post holders will play an important role in the Choral Foundation, providing the music for the statutory Cathedral services.
Lay Clerk Salary: Approximate annualised salary of £19,097 per annum
Our inside observer comments:
‘These positions that have fallen vacant thanks to the significant rift that has occurred over the last years between the current Precentor and the music department which he oversees. As well as looking to appoint one bass, two tenors and two altos, there are also vacancies for deputies in all three voice parts. The permanent positions require approximately 16 hours per week, spread over six days, with a salary around £19,000 per annum. The job spec doesn’t mention that the Dean is going in a few months’ time, and that the Precentor (who has been at the centre of this disquiet) still apparently remains in post, and that there is an interim Director of Music. Apart from these small blips, these are ideal circumstances to apply for what used to be one of the most sought-after cathedral singers’ jobs outside London.’
