Young man from Nazareth wins trophy

The Israeli-Palestinian pianist Nabil Hayek took first prize last night in the Jose Iturbi Competition in Valencia. Hayek, 23, studied with Arie Vardi in Tel Aviv and with Murray Perahia in Jerusalem.

A practising Christian, he takes home 30,000 Euros and a career foothold.

Second (€20,000) was Uladzislau Khandohi from Minsk, in Belarus. Third €10,000) was Ruggiero Fiorella from Puglia in southern Italy.

The jury was chaired by Joaquín Achúcarro.
