London ensemble founder, RIP

The death has been made known of the long-serving artistic director of leading of the Nash Ensemble, Amelia Freedman. The ensemble reached its 60th anniversary last year and a cornerstone of London’s music scene.

Amelia, who was 85, organised the ensemble a student at the Royal Academy of Music and played for four years as its clarinetist. One of her priorities was to form relationships with the leading UK composers Birtwistle, Maxwell Davies, Goehr and the next generation of Julian Anderson and Simon Holt.

In all, the Nash premiered 330 works by 225 composers over 61 years.

Amelia, who had been ill for some time, is survived by three children and several grandchildren. The Nash Ensemble now has Simon Crawford-Phillips and Adrian Brendel as joint artistic directors.
