Ratings war: Radio 3 is a rare BBC hit

The second-quarter radio audience figures are out and it is mostly gloom for the BBC.

Radio 2 has fallen behind commercial Heart FM with a 3.7% drop.

Radio 1’s breakfast show is down 4%

Radio 4 is stable on 9.2m

On the plus side, Radio 3 drew 1.95 million listers, up 6.2% year-on-year. It’s the sixth consecutive year-on-year improvement. R3 boss Sam Jackson told staff today: ‘I’m especially pleased to see us score our highest ever figure among our target 45-64s, with the average listener in this age group now with us for 8 hours and 14 minutes per week…. With Breakfast being broadcast from Salford for the first time this quarter, it’s encouraging to see audiences in the North of England growing +20% year-on-year.’

On the commercial front, Classic FM dropped to 4.4m, down 25,000 listeners year-on-year.
